SEO Agency Letchworth What to Look for and What to Avoid

Right, let's talk about picking an SEO agency in Letchworth

I've been running Hert Bots here in Letchworth for three years now, and before that I was doing digital marketing for another twelve. The number of times I've sat across from a business owner who got burned by their last SEO agency... it's a lot. And it's always the same patterns.

So if you're looking for an SEO agency in Letchworth, or you're in Hitchin or Baldock and wondering whether to go local or pick someone off Google, here's what I'd actually look for. And what I'd run a mile from.

The things that matter (that nobody tells you about)

When you're comparing SEO agencies, everyone talks about "proven results" and "transparent reporting" and all that. Fine. But honestly, that's surface level stuff that anyone can claim.

Here's what actually matters.

Do they explain things in a way that makes sense to you?

If someone's talking to you about "domain authority" and "link velocity" and "topical relevance signals" without ever stopping to check if you're following, that's a red flag. Not because those things aren't real, they are. But because a good agency knows how to translate that into "here's what we're doing and here's why it'll get you more customers."

I had a client come to me last year from a Stevenage business. Previous agency sent them a 40-page PDF every month. Graphs everywhere. Traffic up 23%, bounce rate down 4.7%, core web vitals score improved to 87. He had no idea if any of it mattered. Turns out their actual enquiries had gone down. The agency was optimising for metrics that looked good on a report but did nothing for the business.

You shouldn't need a degree in digital marketing to understand what your agency is doing for you.

Are they talking about AI search yet?

2026, right? If an SEO agency in Letchworth or anywhere else isn't talking to you about AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and how AI search is changing things, they're already behind.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI overviews. People aren't just typing "plumber near me" anymore. They're asking "which plumber in Letchworth should I use for a bathroom renovation and what's a reasonable price?" And if your business isn't showing up in those AI answers, you're invisible to a growing chunk of potential customers.

I'm not saying traditional SEO is dead. It's not. But an agency that's only doing traditional SEO in 2026 is like a mechanic who refuses to work on electric cars. They'll be fine for a bit. Then they won't.

Do they actually know Letchworth?

This one's specific but it matters. A London agency can absolutely do good SEO work for a Letchworth business. They can. But there's something different when an agency actually knows the town.

They know that people search for "Letchworth Garden City" and "Letchworth" interchangeably. They know the difference between someone searching in Hitchin (who might come to you) versus someone in Stevenage (probably too far for most local businesses). They know where the actual footfall is. They know which local links and citations actually matter.

I've worked with businesses from our office on Woolston Avenue for long enough to know that local knowledge isn't everything, but it's not nothing either.

The red flags (run, don't walk)

Guaranteed rankings

"We guarantee first page rankings in 90 days."

Nope.

Anyone who guarantees specific rankings is either lying or planning to rank you for keywords that don't matter. "Congratulations, you're number one for 'blue widget supplier Letchworth Garden City UK online'!" Great. Nobody searches that.

Google's algorithm changes constantly. There are hundreds of ranking factors. Any agency that promises guaranteed positions doesn't understand how SEO actually works, or they're hoping you don't.

The ones who won't show you their actual work

"Trust us, we're doing lots of work behind the scenes."

Cool. Show me.

I don't mean show me a report with graphs. I mean show me the actual pages you've optimised. The content you've created or improved. The technical fixes you've made. The strategy behind it.

If an agency gets vague or defensive when you ask to see the actual work, they're either doing very little or doing things they shouldn't be doing.

Cheap monthly packages

SEO that costs £199 a month isn't SEO. It's maybe someone submitting your site to 50 directories and calling it a day.

Real SEO takes time. Content creation, technical audits, competitor analysis, link building that isn't spammy, ongoing optimisation. That takes hours. Proper hours. An agency charging £200 a month is either running at a loss (they're not) or they're spending about three hours total on your account (they are).

Look, I get it. SEO is expensive. But it's expensive because it works when it's done properly. A cheap agency is just a slow way to waste money.

The ones stuck in 2015

If their whole pitch is "we'll get you backlinks and optimise your meta descriptions", that's... not enough anymore.

Those things matter, sure. But SEO in 2026 is about content that actually answers what people are searching for. It's about user experience. It's about appearing in AI search results, not just traditional Google. It's about entity optimisation and topical authority and a bunch of other things that agencies should have adapted to by now.

I'm not saying every agency needs to be bleeding edge. But they should at least be current-edge.

What good actually looks like

A good SEO agency in Letchworth or anywhere will:

  • Spend time understanding your business before they pitch you anything
  • Explain their strategy in plain English
  • Show you examples of their actual work, not just case study graphs
  • Talk about both traditional SEO and AI search (AEO)
  • Be honest about timelines (SEO takes months, not weeks)
  • Actually answer the phone when you call them

That last one sounds stupid but you'd be surprised.

The local question again

Should you pick a Letchworth agency specifically?

Not necessarily. But there's something to be said for being able to meet someone face to face when things get complicated. Or when you just want to understand what the hell they're doing with your money.

We've got clients from Hitchin, Baldock, Royston, all over North Herts really. Some of them we met for coffee before they signed on. Some of them just found us online. Both work. But I think there's value in local when it comes to something as important as your business's online presence.

You can actually come and knock on the door if things go wrong. That matters.

The thing nobody wants to hear

SEO is a long game. Three months in, you probably won't see dramatic results. Six months in, you should be seeing movement. Twelve months in, if it's done properly, you should be seeing a real difference in enquiries and sales.

Anyone promising faster results is selling you something that won't last.

And that's the thing about picking an agency. You're not just picking someone to do some work for a few months. You're picking a partner for at least a year, probably longer. So don't rush it. Talk to a few agencies. Ask awkward questions. See who actually answers them properly.
